Questions people ask

How are words counted?

A word is any run of letters or digits, including contractions like "don't" and words in any alphabet. Hyphenated words such as "well-known" count as two, which matches how most word processors count them closely but not always exactly.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults reading non-fiction found in Marc Brysbaert's 2019 review of 190 studies. Speaking time assumes 140 words per minute, a typical pace for presentations.

Does the word counter send my text anywhere?

No. Everything on this page is calculated in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or to an AI model.

What is keyword density?

How often a word appears as a share of all words. The list ignores common function words like "the" and "and" so the words your text is really about stand out.

How many words is a page?

About 500 words single-spaced or 250 double-spaced, in a 12-point font with standard margins. It varies with font and layout.
