Why context matters for synonyms

Most common words have several senses. “Sharp” can mean pointed (a sharp knife), sudden (a sharp rise), clever (a sharp mind) or harsh (a sharp reply). A thesaurus shows all of them; only one set fits your sentence. Picking from the wrong sense is the most common way paraphrasing tools produce nonsense, which is why this finder asks for the sentence.

Even within the right sense, synonyms differ: “steep” suggests a large rise, “sudden” stresses speed, “abrupt” sounds more negative. The short notes point out those shades.

Questions people ask

How is this different from a thesaurus?

A thesaurus lists every synonym for every sense of a word. This finder reads your sentence and suggests only words that fit the meaning there, best fit first, with a short note on the difference in nuance.

Can I use it without a sentence?

Yes. Leave the sentence empty and you get synonyms grouped by the word's common senses.

How do I try a synonym in my sentence?

Tap any suggestion to see your sentence with the word swapped in, then copy the new sentence.

Why not just swap every word for a synonym?

Word-by-word swapping often produces unnatural sentences and does not change the structure. See how paraphrasing works for techniques that change sentences properly.
