What a good summary keeps

A summary should answer three questions: what is this about, what is the main claim or finding, and what follows from it. Everything else — examples, background, repetition — is what gets cut. That is roughly what the summarizer is instructed to do, and it is a good checklist for reading its output.

How does the text summarizer work?

The AI reads your whole text and writes a shorter version that keeps the main points and conclusions, at the length and format you choose. It is told not to add anything that is not in the original.

How short will the summary be?

Short aims for about 15% of the original length, Medium about 30% and Long about 50%. TL;DR gives a single sentence of at most 35 words. The word count under the result shows how much it shrank.

Can I summarize a PDF or web page?

Copy the text from the PDF or page and paste it in. Up to 12,000 characters (about 2,000 words) per run.

Can I trust the summary?

Summaries can drop nuance or, rarely, misstate a detail. For anything important, check the key claims against the original before relying on them.
